You may have watched several of the movies mentioned in this list, but for the heck of it, I am sharing my own "preferences." I am mainly including recent films (made in the past decade or two), as I will probably be posting another list with the "antiquities."
Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Hands down one of the most moving films I have ever seen in my life. The characters are fearsome things to behold - sure - but they are admirable nevertheless.
Whale Rider (2005)
Poignant film set in New Zealand. Do not be fooled by the cheesy looking trailer. Watch it, and it will stir you - I guarantee.
El laberinto del fauno (2006)
An interesting take of the Franco period. Guillermo del Toro masterpiece.
Cidade de Deus (2002)
The very thought of this movie makes me shiver. The dirt is real, and that's what makes the movie so fascinating. It shows life as it is and life as it was.
Before Sunrise & Before Sunset
Oh, the joy of silly, romantic movies... :) Had to slide one of these in here.
And some others...
Life of Brian
Kung Fu Panda
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
La Vita e Bella
Pulp Fiction
High Fidelity
About a Boy
Persepolis
Waking Life
Zeitgeist
